Profile

Your relationship to works of fiction?
Writer, Reader
What type of stories do you Write or Read?
My writing focuses on time travel and historicals, particularly in the Regency period, but I’m currently working on a contemporary.

Remember the classic movies from the thirties and forties? Movies like His Girl Friday, The Thin Man, Bringing Up Baby, and My Man Godfrey? The conversation was clever and rapid-fire, the characters were quirky and attractive, the mood was suggestive and subtle. They were never in-your-face, but you remembered them long after the show was over.

I write with those classics lurking in my head. Screwball comedy or romantic mystery, novel or short story, I want you to stay up past your bedtime to find out how my story ends. You'll smile and frown, laugh out loud, and twist the corner of your blanket as you wonder what happens next. I write books you can read on the beach, but they won't fade in your memory as the sun goes down.

Writing in the Dark

Massive thunderstorms rolled through our area this afternoon and I’m now hoping my laptop battery lasts longer than our power outage. On reflection, however, I feel like my current unilluminated situation parallels my writing style. I’m following an interesting thread on the always entertaining Smart B**ches Who Love Trashy Novels blog about writing first drafts. SB Sarah asked her readers how they approach first drafts.… Continue

Them’s Fightin’ Words

One of my favorite authors – she writes mysteries with a touch of romance – will have a new release in one of her highly popular series out this August. I hurried over to an online bookstore today to read up on the release and amuse myself by reading reviews from her last release. All five stars, except two. They didn’t get the romance part of the mystery, which I’m okay with – different strokes, after all. What I’m not okay with is the two-star rating which justified the flaws the male reviewer… Continue

It’s Too Darn Hot

Actually, it has finally cooled down today in New England, but with temperatures hitting ninety-eight degrees in early June, it has me thinking about global warming. Add to that filling up my tank this morning at $4.04/gallon and I wonder sometimes how the planet is going to make it. We’re a pretty crunchy-granola part of the country in my little corner and going green is very hip here. What does this have to do with writing? I’m getting to that, I promise. So I was thinking about this as I re… Continue

Breaking the Rules

On the surface, I appear to be a law-abiding, sensible person, willing to listen to reason and unwilling to rock boats. Stability and comfort – that’s my creed. But underneath my mild-mannered exterior lurks the heart of a rebel. Tell me a rule of writing and I immediately want to break it, particularly the “rules” of writing romance. Obviously, everyone’s opinion varies, but here are some of the rules I’ve heard with some thoughts on each. The hero and heroine have to meet in the first cha… Continue

Memorial Day musings

My maternal grandfather served stateside in World War II – a mechanic for the Navy. My paternal grandfather never served, being exempted from service because he was a mortician and was considered necessary on the home front. He must have felt sensitive about that exemption. When he died in 1995, my father and I found the card from the War Department officially releasing him from the military still in his wallet with his other important items. His son, my uncle, served as a doctor in a MASH unit… Continue

HI Kristin,

Thanks for accepting the connection. Yeah, I get asked so much (usually 5 or more times a day) how tall I am or if I play basketball. I usually answer politely, but man can it get annoying,so the book is more about tolerance and understanding the day to day life of tall women. Humor and inspiration. We gotta laugh and not take ourselves os seriously, right?

I'm with you, so many people don't even give romance a chance, though Inspirational seems to be better accepted in some circles. I know I'll come up against people like that woman more than once but the first time is a shockers to say the least, Sandy
