Emily Bryan 6 MORE Reasons an Editor Stops Reading

So many writers seemed to find my post at Musetracks helpful this week about why editors stop reading. I thought I'd follow that up with 6 more reasons based on the editor panel I moderated at RWA Nationals last year. You can find these career killing mistakes (and learn to avoid them!) at The Chatelaines . Happy Writing, Emily www.emilybryan.blogspot.com (Visit today for a Happy Chanukah post… Continue

Debra A. Kemp Bidding Farewell to NaNoWriMo 2009

December 1 is always a little sad for a WriMo (a writer who participated in the literary frenzy of National Novel Writing Month). And so I am sorry it is over. This was one of my better years at it. Lin was in a very chatty mood and I got some progress for book three of the House of Pendragon series. I'm really proud of two scenes in particular. The first was brought to me by the NaNo-torious Traveling Shovel of Death ( A NaNo tradition of sorts!), and will come early in the flashback portion o… Continue

Elaine Charton accountability...

Amazing what happens when you become accountable to yourself for your writing. The past week I've been getting up at 4am to write before leaving for the dreaded rpj(rent paying job) . I also am sure to post on my network updates just how much I have done that morning. I think that more than anything else has made me consistent. Lets see how I do with week 2 . Continue

Sheila Deeth One Writer's Journey

I would so much like to be a real writer, and I wonder how people that end up with multiple published books get from here to there - or were they never here; were they geniuses right from the start? I asked Pat Bertram, and she's written a really fascinating and encouraging description of her writer's journey. It's on my blog at http://sheiladeeth.blogspot.com/2009/11/one-writers-journey.html. Hope to… Continue

Pat Bertram Raking the Leaves of My Mind

The other morning I was staring out the window at all the leaves on the ground, marveling at how so much come from almost nothing. A bit of water, a bit of soil, a bit of sun, and something exists where nothing did before. I cherish those leaves. There’s no lawn here, just native grasses, so I don’t need to rake the leaves. I let them finish out their natural cycle of replenishing the soil from which they came. Looking at those leaves, I was reminded of written words, and how they come from alm… Continue

Pat Bertram Writing Without a Reader is Like Kissing Without a Partner

One of the guest stops on my Daughter Am I blog tour is the Second Wind Publishing Blog. I talk about a fan letter (well, fan email) I received, and cite a quote by John Cheever, “I can’t write without a reader. It’s precisely like a kiss — you can’t do it alone.” Many writers don’t consider readers -- they write solely for themselves, or at least they say they do -- but often as I am writing a passage (or m… Continue
