Okay, so I just turned in my last owed book today,
Degrees of Passion (Fall 2008, Virgin Books/Random House), and realized I'm all caught up (okay, so that's not completely true, but I'm not counting emails right now). I love having free time on my hands. Now, I'm not sure what I should be doing with that free time as I'm a work-a-holic, but I'm going to pretend surfing other author websites for things to read counts as leisure hours, lol. Next baby step will be actually…

Writing is a solitary condition. We not only lock ourselves up in our room to write in peace. We lock the world out to create. This maybe everyday, or every other day, but it does require us to sit on one place for hours on end, without moving or at least getting our heart rate up. Unless of course an e-mail arrives from an agent and their requesting a full, and the WIP isn’t complete. Then calories burn out of sheer panic.
During long periods of writing stomach muscles relax, we don’t eat…

I blogged yesterday at
Smut Girl about a rating I recieved for my second ebook "
Intruder". The rating was poor. That was it. Poor. Since this is an entirely new community to me, I wanted to find out what some of my new friends thought about bad reviews. And how you deal with them.
I know I am extremly blessed that this is my first encounter with a less than enthusiastic rating. I received several…

1) In the medieval texts, Guinevere is generally childless. Modern novelists have treated this issue in various ways. Debra Kemp deliberately went against this tradition and created Lin, daughter of Guinevere and Arthur. How does this match your perceptions of Guinevere? Of Arthur?
2) To what extent does historical detail matter in the novel? To what extent does Arthurian tradition matter in Recruit? How well does the author balance the two?
3) How do you think Lin has…

"Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence." –Abigail Adams
A word is dead
When it is said,
Some say.
I say it just begins
to live that day.
- Emily Dickinson
As I was reading an email digest, a comment jumped out at me. A poster offered up her opinion: agents decide whom to choose based on how serious a writer seems about their career.
Hmmm… I realized I was tuning…

Bobby, a tribute to you and your brother:
I always feel reget and sadness when I hear of a death, whether in my family or a friend's family. When I lost my father, he was the first person that left me, and the first death I ever had to deal with it. Our daughter was three years old, and my father died when he was the same age I am now. The scars and hurt remain forever, and I've learned that time doesn't heal the pain...it just makes it more bearable to live with it. My father…

Many writing errors can result in the rejection of a manuscript. In this post I'll address the error of "Conflict."
Most of us tend to duck confrontation in our lives.
As writers, the characters in our books almost become extensions of ourselves, and we hate to see them suffer. Part of writing memorable fiction is to put our characters in the middle of a mess, and then cut off every avenue of relief until the character (along with the reader) thinks all is lost. Only…

Piece of Chalk and an Old Paint Box.
On the day I started school in Dunedin, I recall clearly being given a piece of white chalk and being allowed to draw on the black board. I was so surprised. I thought school was about learning to read, write, spell and doing number things but not drawing on black boards! This was so much fun! When I finished I returned the chalk to the teacher thanking her but she told me I could keep that piece of chalk. It was just for me for as long as it…
