How do I Begin?

Posted on May 21, 2008 at 11:18am 0 Comments

In my workbook The Sense-ible Writer, I walk students through the process of writing a marketable novel. In this series of blog posts, I’ll provide guidelines the beginning writer can use to evaluate his/her idea for writing a novel.

Many people seem to harbor at their core, a hunger to write fiction. In writing classes I teach online and in the standard class setting, students inevitably ask… Continue

Replenish Your Creativity

Have you ever holed up in your room so you could read a book?

Have you ever read through the night, knowing you’d regret it the next day?

Reading has become an essential part of our lives. As a result, we probably recognize good writing when we experience it, although this may be on a subconscious level. However, if we consciously analyze the books we read, we can—almost by osmosis—add to our knowledge of the writing craft .

With every novel you read, find… Continue

Why does a Publisher Reject a Manuscript?

Posted on April 23, 2008 at 8:07am 8 Comments

Many writing errors can result in the rejection of a manuscript. In this post I'll address the error of "Conflict."

Most of us tend to duck confrontation in our lives.

As writers, the characters in our books almost become extensions of ourselves, and we hate to see them suffer. Part of writing memorable fiction is to put our characters in the middle of a mess, and then cut off every avenue of relief until the character (along with the reader) thinks all is lost. Only… Continue

Where did 2008 go? I guess when you’re busy time really does fly because mine has certainly taken wing.

WRDF launched in February of 2008 and its membership has grown steadily. I hope that means we are doing something right for our members.

We have some fabulously talented writers among us. I would encourage you to take a little time to visit a couple new pages each week. The photos, videos, blurbs, excerpts, bios, blogs, graphics, and I could go on and on, are super fun and so interesting. No one has an excuse to be bored on this site with so much to read and see.

I hope you’ve kept up with WRDF’S newest features. All are great promotional opportunities for writers and great fun for our readers.

The Tipping Point Workshops (TTP WORKSHOP TAB),
The Contest announcement page (CONTEST TAB)
The Bookmark giveaway page (BOOKMARK TAB)
The Free reads page (FREE READS TAB).

Our book discussion club, LOST IN A GOOD BOOK, is going strong. We’ve had good participation and if you haven’t kept up with some of our adventurous discussion comments, you’ve missed the action.

We’ve also launched a new online newsletter, WRDF Online. Be sure to open and read your copy when it comes. You never know what you might be missing.

Lastly, you’ll notice a new WRDFCalendar Tab on your page. What a nice way to keep all our members notified of current and up-coming events. You’ll notice that Fridays are Guest blog days at Between the Lines. Why not take a moment, check the calendar, and reserve a couple of spots for yourself during 2009. You can request your dates at: promo@lyndacoker.com

Thank you for spending time with us. Stay safe and well,
Lynda

Hi Nadene. Would love to be friends. I see you write US historical fiction. I love historicals, especially cowboy themed books. My book, Heart of Stone, is a contemporary western, but some day I'll make a foray into historicals.

Hello Nadene!

I love Sci-fi and alternate history too. Speculative fiction, I call it. Makes me think!

Welcome to the group!
