Make Your Characters Come Alive!

Try these techniques to bring life to your characters, and find out who they really are.1. Make a list of adjectives that describe your character. Use a thesaurus for words you may not think of off the top of your head.2. Spend two hours "being" your character. Do whatever you are doing normally, but try to think like your character. Get inside his or her skin.3. Write up questions and interview your character. Be "in character" when you answer.4. Ask a friend or family member of the character…See More

One Small Thing a Day

Few of us have the luxury of being able to write for long, productive, uninterrupted stretches each day. And when life gets busy, it can be difficult to hold on to the belief that "yes, I am a writer."I try to do some small thing each day, whether it is rereading and revising a chapter, sending out a submission, making a contact, writing a blog post. It may seem simple, but at the end of the day, I know I have accomplished a meaningful task. And the small things add up. A chapter a day, seven…See More

Writing a Synopsis

Posted on October 12, 2010 at 4:07pm 2 Comments

Writing a synopsis of a novel is every bit as evil as everyone says, and much more difficult than writing the novel itself.

When writing a novel, you have the freedom to let your imagination run as wild as your characters do, and it the story wants to take an unexpected twist, you can allow it the freedom to do just that. Even if you have worked your way through revision number seven, tightening and elaborating the path of the story, you still have that freedom. You are still the… Continue

Dealing with the Day

Posted on June 30, 2009 at 11:10am 0 Comments

During my "free" days in this busy summer, I am devoting my mornings to promoting my soon-to-be-released novel, and finishing the next one.

Today so far:

I worked on my web site. One day soon I will be able to hire someone to do this technical dirty work. I struggled with updating the appearance, and then ran into a snag when the images on the home page decided to overlap across each other. So I have a call for help in to the powers that be.

I wrote an entry on… Continue

Many thanks for the link up, Kathleen. I’m looking at ways where we can help each other promote our material and ourselves. I suppose it begins with good communication. Did you have anything in mind in addition to this? I'm not that experienced in writing but I have a wealth of knowledge about people. This is the cover to my co-written book. You’d be welcome to post yours in my comments box or to the text facility on my page. All you have to do is ask :-)

I'm in the throes of helping to breathe a bit of extra life into WRDF. Can we be friends? If so, please add me.

Hi,

I can’t believe it’s November already. Where has this year gone? I guess when you’re busy time really does fly because mine has certainly taken wing.

WRDF launched in February of 2008 and its membership has grown steadily. I hope that means we are doing something right for our members.

We have some fabulously talented writers among us. I would encourage each member to take a little time day to visit a couple new pages each week. The book covers, blurbs, excerpts, bios, photos, blogs, graphics, and I could go on and on, are super fun and so interesting. No one has an excuse to be bored on this site with so much to read and see.

I hope you’ve kept up with WRDF’S newest features, The Tipping Point Workshops, our contest announcement page, our bookmark giveaway page, and our free reads page. All are great promotional opportunities for writers and great fun for our readers.

Our book discussion club, LOST IN A GOOD BOOK, is going strong. We’ve had good participation and if you haven’t kept up with some of our adventurous discussion comments, you’ve missed the action.

We’ve also launched a new online newsletter, WRDF Online. Be sure to open and read your copy when it comes. You never know what you might be missing.

Thank you for spending time with us. Stay safe and well,

Lynda

Also, check out our official blog and review site, Between the Lines and our new book club, LOST..In A Good Book. All of these sites can be reached through their quick-link banner on our Main Page or on the right-hand column of your own page.

Thanks,
Lynda
