It's been ages since I've posted a fresh blog. The curse of being non-prolific! Writing is slow in the third volume of Lin's story, so I think the writer's block affects me here as well. All my usual prompts aren't working, but it did a spark an ide…

The House of Pendragon II: The Recruit Wins Best Great Lakes Regional Book in Reader Views 2007 Annual Literary Awards

(Austin, Texas) “The House of Pendragon II: The Recruit” by Debra A. Kemp [978-1-59279-699-1, Amber Quill Press, 2007] was selected as the best Great Lakes Regional book of 2007 by Reader Views Annual Literary Awards. Reader Views Annual Literary Awards were established to honor writers who self-published or had their books published by a small press, university press, or independent book publisher.

“Reader Views reviews more than 2,000 books per year from budding authors who have worked hard to achieve their dream of being published,” Reader Views Managing Editor Irene Watson says. “Our Annual Literary Awards recognize the very best of these up-and-coming authors, all talented writers who we know have very promising writing careers ahead of them.”

The Reader Views Annual Literary Awards are granted in 20 fiction and 30 nonfiction categories, as well as 15 specialized, sponsored categories. The entries are judged by Reader Views reviewers, all avid readers with a wide range of experiences, considered experts in the respective fields.

About “The House of Pendragon II: The Recruit”

Can Lin prevail as a recruit in the Pendragon’s army? Or will her past return to haunt her?

Remnants of NaNoWriMo 2009

I just deleted the first of 208 "Dafydd, who was really my foster brother but to me he was the true brother of my very heart and of my very soul's". I did a seek for that string out of curiosity. 208 times 24=4992 words from a single padding trick. Nearly 10 percent of the 50k goal. Nothing to sneeze at. And kinda sad to see them go. But every time I come across one, I will smile before I delete it.

Bidding Farewell to NaNoWriMo 2009

December 1 is always a little sad for a WriMo (a writer who participated in the literary frenzy of National Novel Writing Month). And so I am sorry it is over. This was one of my better years at it. Lin was in a very chatty mood and I got some progress for book three of the House of Pendragon series.

I'm really proud of two scenes in particular. The first was brought to me by the NaNo-torious Traveling Shovel of Death ( A NaNo tradition of sorts!), and will come early in the flashback portion o… Continue

It Takes a House for Me to Write a Novel

It seems to take an entire house to write novel. I have an office where I do most of my work. It's cluttered with three ring binders and note books and tattered bits of paper and sticky notes. Stacks of cd cases of inspirational music are near to hand on the floor next to my "throne". Currently Rush is my music of choice. And in a side thought, I realized, why bother playing Rush if you can't crank it up to 11? (I had to turn it down for a brief stint on the phone.)

But back to the topic. I hav… Continue

Casting Call for The House of Pendragon

It's been ages since I've posted a fresh blog. The curse of being non-prolific! Writing is slow in the third volume of Lin's story, so I think the writer's block affects me here as well. All my usual prompts aren't working, but it did a spark an idea for a fun blog.

Writer's are often asked: If your novel were to be made into a movie, who would play your lead characters? I have some distinct visuals for Lin, Dafydd and Modred. But I don't want to intrude on what my readers have visualized from… Continue

Discussion questions for RECRUIT

1) In the medieval texts, Guinevere is generally childless. Modern novelists have treated this issue in various ways. Debra Kemp deliberately went against this tradition and created Lin, daughter of Guinevere and Arthur. How does this match your perceptions of Guinevere? Of Arthur?

2) To what extent does historical detail matter in the novel? To what extent does Arthurian tradition matter in Recruit? How well does the author balance the two?

3) How do you think Lin has changed or grown since t… Continue

Where has this year gone? I guess when you’re busy time really does fly because mine has certainly taken wing.

WRDF launched in February of 2008 and its membership has grown steadily. I hope that means we are doing something right for our members.

We have some fabulously talented writers among us. I would encourage you to take a little time to visit a couple new pages each week. The photos, videos, blurbs, excerpts, bios, blogs, graphics, and I could go on and on, are super fun and so interesting. No one has an excuse to be bored on this site with so much to read and see.

I hope you’ve kept up with WRDF’S newest features. All are great promotional opportunities for writers and great fun for our readers.

The Tipping Point Workshops (TTP WORKSHOP TAB),
The Contest announcement page (CONTEST TAB)
The Bookmark giveaway page (BOOKMARK TAB)
The Free reads page (FREE READS TAB).

Our book discussion club, LOST IN A GOOD BOOK, is going strong. We’ve had good participation and if you haven’t kept up with some of our adventurous discussion comments, you’ve missed the action.

We’ve also launched a new online newsletter, WRDF Online. Be sure to open and read your copy when it comes. You never know what you might be missing.

Lastly, you’ll notice a new WRDFCalendar Tab on your page. What a nice way to keep all our members notified of current and up-coming events. You’ll notice that Fridays are Guest blog days at Between the Lines. Why not take a moment, check the calendar, and reserve a couple of spots for yourself during 2009. You can request your dates at: promo@lyndacoker.com

Thank you for spending time with us. Stay safe and well,
Lynda
