I have three books presently available in the electronic form and one being released Oct 13th (Before You Say Goodbye). It was 15 months from first keystroke to first contract. I began my first book in July 2005 as a result of a story that occured to me that simply begged to be written. I was inspired by a movie I had seen---one actor in particular. Never having followed Hollywood or celebs, I looked to the internet to see what the buzz was all about. Finding huge communities on each actor/actress fan website(s) it occured that there must be scads of folks who had daydreamed about actually getting a reply from the man/woman of their fancy when writing a fan letter. It was the first time I had been so moved (to write to an actor)
Suffering from the lonely isolation of fame, my Scottish actor/hero is struggling with his life. He knows not who to trust. People all seem to want something from him and little else. Fascinated by her acuity the hero pursues the Californian woman through an affair of words. He is as determined to open her heart as she is to save him from his self-imposed solitude. But before they can dream of what lies in the future, they must come to grips with their pasts, as well as the myriad of obstacles fate and fame place in their way. ... Little does she know he will return the favor when her world is torn apart by tragedy.
Autobiographical? ...particially, as all good fiction is, I believe. We write best when using our own experiences woven into a new fabric.
Working full time? That is tough, but let me tell you most authors do. This is not a money making pursuit...truly the vast majority are starving artists. We do it for love, for legacy and because the voice of our characters demand to be heard.
I was working as curriculum specialst at an after school care program when I began. Coming off extreme burnout as a kindergarten teacher for seven years, I looked to save myself through the cheapest and best therapy on the planet...fiction writing. Weird career change...kindergarten teacher to spicy romance author? lol.
Did my actor write back to me? why...yes. What happens next? Only my best girlfriend knows for sure *wink*
This book, btw, was not the first I sold. It took joining my local RWA group and learning the tricks of the trade to rewirte it whilst continuing to write others, before it was picked up by my now publisher.
The first book I sold was written during a house exchange trip to Britain. Set in a rural village on the outskirts of London. It's a fun fast and spicy read. I used the writing as a sort of release vavle for the book that was slowing me down...a romantic suspense. I had never tried to place red herrings and keep track of them all! SO I took a detour and wrote fun and spicy. Voila...a sale. Only then did my pub look at some of my other work, (They now knew I could write...lol)
All this was accomplished during those moment you are forced to wait...doctor's offices, period of slow at work, car rides when someone else is driving. Like an internal fire, it simple had to come out. Once bitten by the writing bug, there's no going back.
So Darlene, do not get discouraged. Join an author's group. YOu will learn more at one metting than you could glean on your own in six months of research. The networking and support are unparrelled. Then write, write, write. You'll keep growing, improving, discovering your voice. Tenacity is the name of the game. Expect LOTS of rejection. It's NOt negative. Just a steping stone to the editor that will love your work
Best of luck my new friend.
Warm Regards,
Christine London

Just dropping by to say "hi" and see if you'd like to keep in touch..be friends. Writing is quite the solitary profession, is it not? We all have to stick together!
