No, I didn't join. Now, I don't know why. I think I forgot about it. But I should. I dropped out of RWA, and joined EPIC instead. I felt I was getting nothing from RWA, and for the money, it wasn't worth it. I shopped around for a writers group of...

Linda--are you going to blog or something about the retreat in the Davis Mtns? Oh, I wish I could have gone--too much going on, though. If you do post or blog, be sure to send me the link--I want to hear your experiences. Celia

Profile Information

Are you a writer, reader, or other industry professional
A reader, a writer.
If a writer, are you published, pre-pubbed, or self-published?
Published
As a writer, what type of stories do you Write or Read?
I write romance, especially about Texas--some are historical, others are contemporary, but always Texas-based. My first novel for The Wild Rose Press is ALL MY HOPES AND DREAMS--a Texas Historical, now available in ebook from www.thewildrose.press and in print from The Wild Rose Press book store,Amazon, B&N, or any on-line bookstore. My reading material varies--history, best sellers, My University Women Book Club Selections, romance.
As a reader, what is your favorite genre, writer?
Western Historical, Contemporary Romance,Western, some Inspirational
If you're an industry professional, tell us a little about your area of interest.
I write mostly Texas Historical romance, but I have some stories in my computer I suppose might be called Women's Fiction, although I don't have a clear definition. Sometimes I write contemporary romance, but haven't had much success with those. I'm still learning.I also write essay for magazine and the newspaper--I get a nice check for some--write free for others.
How did you come to know about WRDF?
Lynda Coker e-mailed me.
What is your first impression of our site?
I like the fact there are many members and the group writes varied genres. I like a break from all romance all the time, so I enjoy learning about some other author and what he/she writes. I enjoy having my own page, my own blog, and an easy way to e-mail all my friends. But sometimes the site frustrates me--too many things to choose from, and I haven't taken the time to sort it all out.
Do you have a website you'd like to post?

Crystal Clear-Artesian Springs of Texas

Hello, friends--I wrote an article for the Cactus Rose Blog, connected to my publisher The Wild Rose Press. The Cactus Rose line includes authors who write Western Historical Romances. Collectively, we and our editors contribute to the blog.
This month, I wrote about the artesian springs of Central and West Texas. It's amazing to me that there are so many scattered across the vast expanse, where little growth usually occurs. The pure, clean springs have provided fresh water for thousands of year… Continue

ANNOUNCING-THE BOOK SPA-Sept. 8

Greetings to all Writers and Readers of Distinctive Fiction:
Last week, I asked the question: How many blogs, etc. are too many? or not enough? Well, I received some wonderful advice and useful wisdom, so I decided it wouldn't hurt to have one more--I have so few now.
I teamed up with four other fantastic ladies from The Wild Rose Press and we created a Yahoo! loop that we named THE BOOK SPA.
The idea is, of course, for all authors, readers, and writers to join us to "read, write, unwind." We in… Continue

MY BOOK CLUB'S FIRST SELECTION: THE GOOD EARTH

Now, how many of you have read THE GOOD EARTH? How many of you have ever heard of it and the author, Pearl S. Buck? How many of you were born when she wrote it? Ahh, I will retract that question, because there are but one or two, if any, and perhaps we don't really need to know such a thing? You see, Pearl S. Buck was born in 1892 and this novel, her second, was published in 1931. Her real name was Pearl Comfort Sydenstricker, and her birthplace was Hillsboro, West Virginia. However, she spent m… Continue

To Share a "First"

Dear friends, one and all,
I am experiencing a "first". This is an event that will NEVER happen again. It is impossible that it will ever, ever take place again. As of this moment, I am half-way through this "first event" in my very happy, interesting, eventful life. It's something that ten years ago, I never knew existed. What is it? Have you guessed? If you are an author with at least one published book you know exactly what I'm talking about. EDITING A GALLEY. Yes, I am on page 145, halfway t… Continue

Thank you for your kind words Celia, and yes I do remember that terrific review. I wrote reviews too, but like you, I read the whole book. With working, writing, family obligations, etc. it just was too time consuming. We were retired. OOPS, lost a lot in the market, and than the family needed financial help. As soon as the economy picks up and we don't have such a drain on our finances, I will finish "Hidden Death." It's a romantic suspense set in the Florida Keys, and I do think it is my best yet. Right now I am trying to find a home for "A New Witch Hunt "and "Zemmie". They are two articles and freelancing pays much better than book royalties.

Where has this year gone? I guess when you’re busy time really does fly because mine has certainly taken wing.

WRDF launched in February of 2008 and its membership has grown steadily. I hope that means we are doing something right for our members.

We have some fabulously talented writers among us. I would encourage you to take a little time to visit a couple new pages each week. The photos, videos, blurbs, excerpts, bios, blogs, graphics, and I could go on and on, are super fun and so interesting. No one has an excuse to be bored on this site with so much to read and see.

I hope you’ve kept up with WRDF’S newest features, The Tipping Point Workshops, our contest announcement page, our bookmark giveaway page, and our free reads page. All are great promotional opportunities for writers and great fun for our readers.

Our book discussion club, LOST IN A GOOD BOOK, is going strong. We’ve had good participation and if you haven’t kept up with some of our adventurous discussion comments, you’ve missed the action.

We’ve also launched a new online newsletter, WRDF Online. Be sure to open and read your copy when it comes. You never know what you might be missing.

Lastly, you’ll notice a new WRDFCalendar Tab on your page. What a nice way to keep all our members notified of current and up-coming events. You’ll notice that Fridays are Guest blog days at Between the Lines. Why not take a moment, check the calendar, and reserve a couple of spots for yourself during 2009. You can request your dates at: btlblog@lyndacoker.com

Thank you for spending time with us. Stay safe and well,
Lynda

Hey Celia,
The editor got back to me... Explained the delay and told me how much she wants my book to be published.
I don't have a contract, but it's a start.
Thanks again.

Thank you, Celia, for the comment. The music is one I play while I'm writing. It helps put me in the mood without being a distraction. My middle son, a music comp major, introduced me to a number of Japanese composers before going off to college. It opened my eyes to a wealth of music I'd not otherwise have found. This is one of the results.

The background image, I chose because of its use of light, shadow, and color. Additionally, the feathers have a texture that make them almost tangible. I fell in love with the picture from the first moment.

Now, if only my writing can elicit similar emotion from its readers...

I've made a blog post (http://romancewriterandreader.ning.com/profiles/blog/show?id=1998674%3ABlogPost%3A44689) today and hope you may have the time and inclination to take a look. It is a short story from the world of my current novel project.

I've always thought stories were best when, regardless of the genre or setting, they were about people and their relationships. I've attempted to capture that in the story that I posted.

Be well,
William
