What type of stories do you Write or Read?
I write contemporary, culture-based romance, under the pen name of Aasiyah Qamar. With an Indian twist, my stories take place on the Southern Indian Ocean island of Mauritius, a rainbow nation where every race and culture under the sun live in harmony. My heroines however are modern young women trying to find their place in a world of globalisation, coping with freedom to be their own person while society still wants them to be shackled to the world of customs, tradition, and culture.

I also branch out in more mainstream contemporaries, under the name of Nolwynn Ardennes. These stories do not have the cultural element and take place in settings from all over the world, though London holds a special place in my heart. Twists under this name can be paranormal, time-travel, fantasy, or simply a very alpha hero whom the heroine loves to hate but hates to love too. Sky's the limit for my imagination here!

As a reader, I love humor, chick-lit, women's fiction, contemporaries, paranormal, and historicals. I don't have specific authors since I love to read what tickles my fancy, but Sophie Kinsella, Marian Keyes, Jill Mansell and Philippa Gregory are sure to catch my attention.

Images of my beautiful island, Mauritius

Underwater image, at one of the many beaches surrounded by some of the most vibrant coral reef marine parks of the Indian Ocean.

This is the setting of my first novel, The Other Side, a story of lost love and renewed trust, mingling the fate of an Indian divorcee when she meets her first love, a man of a different race. The story is one of permission to love and following your heart on a backdrop of racial prejudice and latent cultural segregation.

Here's the question Agony Z answers this fortnight: I keep being urged to “show, not tell” by my crit partners. They say what I give isn’t enough, but I don’t understand, since I do give descriptions and explanations. Can you please enlighten me here? Find out what the answer is on Between The Lines http://blog.lyndacoker.net/ Cheers!

Music from Mauritius

Check out typical music from my island. The language is Creole, the mother tongue here. The genre is called Sega. As you go down the playlist, you get to more modern sounds added to the traditional music. Enjoy!
