Promoting your work is more time consuming that writing it...because there is a beginning but there in never an end. I wish I had someone to organize the entire campaign around my next book.

I'm delighted to say that 'Legacy of the Ripper' has just been awarded 'Recommended Read' status by the reviewers at review body CK2S Kwips and Kritiques. This is great news as the book is also nominated for the 'Best Thriller' award in The Preditors & Editors Awards, won last year by 'A Study in Red'. I'll be posting news of the awards and how to vote when the polls open tomorrow 1st January and I hope a few of my friends will support my nomination, and also that of my children's book 'Tilly's Tale' which has been nominated in the Best Children's book category.

In the meantime, here's what the reviewer at Kwips & Kritiques had to say:

Jack the Ripper has left behind more than just historic horror, but a journal as well. Upon receiving the journal, as his Uncle before him in A STUDY IN RED-THE SECRET JOURNAL OF JACK THE RIPPER, Jack Thomas Reid discovers more than he has bargained for. On trial for a series of copycat Jack the Ripper-esque murders, his only defense is that he is a descendent of the killer, but the actual killings were done by a mystery man trying to set him up. Jack’s sanity obviously comes into question, but with further scrutiny, there could be more to his story than originally meets the eye.

In a page turning sequel to A STUDY IN RED-THE SECRET JOURNAL OF JACK THE RIPPER, Brian L. Porter has written a winner. Taking a well told and hypothesized about character such as Jack the Ripper and finding a new story to tell was a wonderful surprise.

I found the characters to be realistic, and hauntingly so. From the junkie on the street, to the poor lonely widow to the insane Jack Reid, all were easy to fall into the story with. Brian L. Porter has a way of giving the reader a path upon which to suspend disbelief and LEGACY OF THE RIPPER is another fine example.

Obviously well researched, this book is a gem for any “Ripper-ologist”. Characterizations, time lines and details of events are accurate to the smallest detail. The plot kept me turning pages, longing to learn more about a subject that is fairly well known; one chapter ending with another question until ending too soon with twists never suspected.

Although not entirely necessary, it would be a good idea to read A STUDY IN RED-THE SECRET JOURNAL OF JACK THE RIPPER before enjoying LEGACY OF THE RIPPER. They each stand alone, and the author does a good job of referencing the first Ripper novel in his second to explain the relationships, but a good foundation is formed in A STUDY IN RED.

I’m happy to recommend!

As this will be my last post before Christmas, I wanted to share with you the latest, really lovely review that my humble little book, Tilly's Tale has received. Martha Cheves is a reviewer with a difference. All the book reviews she carries out are accompanied by a delicious recipe that goes hand in hand with the book. In this case she has provided a WONDERFUL recipe for DOG TREATS. Whoopee. I'm sure she won't mind me sharing her lovely recipe and her review with everyone, so without further ado, and wishing you all a very Merry Christmas once again, here it is.

Tilly's Tale - Harry Porter, Author

Tilly Tale Treats
These treats were created by Jenn DiPiazza
The Leftover Queen

2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup non-fat dry milk powder (we actually had this in our hurricane stash!)
1/2 tsp salt
6 TBS butter
1 egg
1 cup water
3 tsp wheat bran
3 TBS Peanut Butter

METHOD:

Preheat oven to 350 F. Put butter and egg in food processor and process until smooth. In a bowl mix the flour, milk powder, salt and wheat bran together. Add flour mixture, PB and water alternately to butter and egg mixture and pulse processor until the dough has come together into a nice ball (you may not need to use all the water).

Roll the dough out onto a floured surface and roll to about 1/2 inch thickness. If you have a cookie cutter, cut the shapes out. If not, you can use the Roberto method. Cut small (about 2 inch long) rectangles in the dough with a knife.

Fold piece in half lengthwise. Squish the middle of each end towards the center to make the 2 rounded knobs at each end. Flip over to smooth side and place on a cookie sheet (don’t worry about spacing, they aren’t going to grow).

Bake for about 15 minutes, flip and then bake another 3-4 minutes. Place on cookie racks to cool and keep out overnight to harden.

Makes about 60-70 cookies.

Tilly's Tale - Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat

First let me say that I'm an animal lover. It doesn't matter what the animal might be, I love them all but dogs are my favorite. They give non-conditional love no matter what you may do to them or how you may treat them. After reading the first few pages of Tilly's Tale I had to put the book down, hold my own dog and cry. The neglect of this beautiful animal tore at my heart. The more I read, the more I held my dog, Puff, and cried. When Tilly was finally taken to the shelter I had some relief from the pain that I felt for her, but when she was rescued and taken to her new home I have to admit that I still cried but they were tears of joy and happiness.

Tilly's Tale is a book that EVERYONE should read. If you are an animal lover and owner, like me, you will cherish your little angels even more. If you are not an animal lover, you may become one after reading Tilly's Tale. Animals that we make into pets, especially dogs, are God sent guardian angels and deserve the respect, love and kindness that you would give any angel. This is one book that I can't praise enough. It's a book I recommend to everyone, including kids. It has a message in it for all of us.

I'm happy to say that Tilly's Tale has picked up another 5 star review at Amazon.com. this follows hot on the heels of the previous two reviews received this week. The 'wag-o-meter' on Tilly's tail is almost off the scale. It just won't stop wagging! Tilly also 'signed' a couple of books at the dog training academy yesterday. She's getting rather good at it...lol

Here's the latest:

I'm delighted to be able to add not one but TWO wonderful 5 star reviews received on Amazon and Barnes & Noble by Tilly's Tale. I'm so pleased that the book seems to be doing exactly what it was intended to in terms of reaching out to educate and inform people about the plight of abused and neglected dogs, and about the great work of those who work so hard to rescue and re-home them. As for Tilly, she's so happy her 'wagometer' has gone off the scale and her tail muscles must be getting worn out!

Here's what the reviewers had to say:

5.0 out of 5 stars Tilly - an ideal book for all ages, December 17, 2009
By Gladys Hobson (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)

I know from experience what inspires youngsters and the sort of stories that appeal to them.
Children will enjoy reading this book themselves. And younger children having it read to them. It is inspiring and speaks of the emotions of those who rely on others for their essential needs, protection and comfort. Children can relate to this -- for themselves and their own pets. Teachers would enjoy reading this book to their young pupils. I have no doubt that the children would be inspired to write both about Tilly and their own pet, and to paint pictures. They could also be involved in drama using the book's theme. I almost wish I was still teaching!
A delightful story for any age.

And on Barnes & Noble...

Sad but redeeming story from the dog's view.

Posted December 10, 2009, 11:24 PM EST: Harry Porter tells a heart felt tale of a terrier Tilly in her own words. A great book to introduce younger readers to plight of homeless pets but also teaches them how a little love and attention can change these pets for the better. Mandy Hedrick's illustation's add depth and help tell Tilly's story.

I'm pleased to be able to let everyone know that 'Tilly's Tale' is currently being offered by the publisher at a 15% discount in the run-up to Christmas. The reduced price will apply up to the 20th December and can be obtained by going to http://4rvpublishingllc.com/ Obviously this price will benefit US readers but those in the UK can also take advantage of a small discount plus free Super Saver Delivery at Amazon.co.uk

Tilly is a very special little dog. She was unwanted, unkempt and barely recognizable as a dog when we first found her. Her story is a canine tale of a triumph against the odds. From being a 'scruffy mutt' in a rescue sanctuary she has become a star at agility and search and rescue work and is 'pack leader' to our family of rescued dogs. I hope her story will go some way towards raising awareness of the plight of abandoned, abused and neglected dogs around the world and also the wonderful work performed by those who staff the various rescue centers and dog sanctuaries who care for them and help to find them loving caring homes.

I'd just like to take the opportunity to say a big Thank You to all who've already purchased Tilly's Tale and also to wish all of my friends a very Happy Christmas and a joyous and prosperous New Year. (And Happy Christmas from Tilly too!)
