I have previously posted this in a blog, but have had no replies.
I heard recently that if I have published a book by self publishing, subsidy publishing, or using a print on demand such as PublishAmerica, that I cannot use them as credits on my publication resume.
Does anyone know if this is true or not?
Depends upon to whom you intend to submit your resume. Unfortunately there is a great deal of discrimination within the publishing world. It tends to go hand-in-hand with the arrogance among some sectors of the profession. However, you should always remember a basic truth about the purpose of a resume. It is designed to provide a prospective publisher or employer with an overview of your work history. If you have successful published a novel, it matter less through what channel than the merit of the content and what success you have had at marketing.
Additionally, and especially with regard to print-on-demand publishers, the name is a reference to the method of printing (computerized rather than off-set) rather than whether the publishing house is respectable. In the end, no matter how you bacame published, you will still need to validate your work. If you've sold a thousand copies of your work through self publishing, you're still more successful than an author who sold fifty copies through a traditional publisher.
